A few weeks ago, I was asked to help a friend with his teenage daughter’s experience of birth control pills. In his “I’ve had a few headaches from birth control pills,” he said, “and I think my daughter is a bit tired.”
I asked him to explain the reasons for this behavior and to explain how he’s started using birth control pills to help me get pregnant. “I was thinking about using birth control pills and I heard this is a good way to help the little lady.”
I couldn’t put my hands on her, but I figured it would be okay to tell her about the birth control pills I was using.
In my first appointment, I gave her a shot of Yasmin (an SSRI), which I’d heard on the Internet. “You don’t want to know what it is and you think this is a good thing to do. You just want to get pregnant,” I said.
“Well, it is not good and I don’t know how it works or it isn’t working,” she replied. “What is it?”
“We’re all different,” I said. “What are you talking about?”
“The only thing we’ve tried is for you to talk to her in her sleep,” she said. “I think she’s tired and she wants to get pregnant,” I said, thinking she wasn’t going to get pregnant. “It’s not a good idea to talk to her in her sleep.”
I explained that I’ve never had an experience like this, and that if she is taking birth control pills for the first time, she’ll need to be careful. “I think if she’s taking it regularly, we’re going to have to stop her taking it,” I said. “She can’t handle it anymore,” I added.
“You’re right. You’ve heard of birth control pills and you’re not going to get pregnant,” she said. “It’s a bad thing for us,” I added.
It wasn’t just her that was hurting, it was the other woman, Yasmin. My daughter and I both knew that wasn’t the case.
I explained that I’ve never had a problem taking birth control pills. I didn’t know that the pill works for everyone, and if it doesn’t work for you, you may not want to be taking it. And if you’re not sure, you may not want to talk to your doctor first.
“What’s the good thing about birth control pills?” I asked. “I mean, it’s not like a drug for you.”
She was surprised that I wasn’t talking to her in her sleep.
“I’m really not sure how it works,” she said. “But I’ve had the same experience.”
My daughter and I both had a lot of questions about birth control pills, and I’m sure it’s the right thing to do.
The birth control pill that’s on my list of options isn’t as easy to take as the birth control pill that I’m currently taking. But she said birth control pills are a great way to help her, too. “I’m very happy with how I’m doing,” she said.

The pill I’m using is Yasmin. I haven’t taken it yet, but I’ve had success with it. I haven’t taken it because my doctor didn’t tell me to. I’ve also not been able to get pregnant because I’ve had to take birth control pills.
